ABOUT
ABOUT
From a young age Matt has been an exciting musician, getting to a high level on both trumpet and piano and composing a piece for his school windband, all before leaving primary school. Making the switch to trombone aged 14, he continued to grow across multiple genres, touring both America with award-winning youth big band ‘Hot House’, and Switzerland as the principal trombonist of the National Youth Wind Orchestra.
In his late teens, Matt’s love of jazz grew, and in 2020 he began to study jazz at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. Since then, he has played with an array of the finest musicians in the country, appearing with the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra, London Jazz Orchestra and London Intercollegiate Jazz Orchestra, as well as Cameron Scott’s ‘Art of Bekhi Mseleku’ quintet alongside guests Gareth Lockrane and Julian Joseph. He can also be heard on Hans Koller’s recent albums ‘Word from Bird’ and ‘Natural Science’, alongside a stellar line-up including Percy Pursglove, Xhosa Cole, and Byron Wallen. Matt also enjoys playing across many genres, regularly appearing with northern-soul band ‘Souldeep’ featuring Jamie Joseph, and burning salsa group ‘Salsa Cutty Sark’ led by Pietro Iacopini.
Now coming to the end of his studies, Matt is drawing on his classical, jazz, and folk roots to develop his own music. Inspired by a huge range of musicians from Kenny Wheeler to Stevie Wonder to Dimitri Shostakovich, he leads his own jazz quintet, has worked on multiple occasions with the Ibaia String Quartet, and is currently composing and arranging music for his 16-piece chamber orchestra.
